Thinking of writing a book?

Have you always wanted to write a book? Never had time? It may be easier than you think - by partnering with SAE's publishing program.

SAE is actively seeking new authors to join our expanding publishing program. SAE is the world's premier mobility engineering organization, with more than 90,000 members in nearly 100 countries.

SAE has been publishing for over 100 years. Since expanding our publishing program in 1989 to include technical and historical books written by subject-matter experts, our program has grown to over 500 titles currently in print.

Here are some frequently-asked questions about publishing with SAE:

Why publish with SAE?
How much money will I make?
How do I get started?
How can SAE help me while I'm writing?
I've finished writing - what's next?
How will SAE market my book?

Q. Why publish with SAE?
A. Here are just a few reasons to publish with SAE:

  • SAE has the unique ability to reach the mobility engineering markets through our database of over 500,000 customers, including more than 90,000 SAE members.
  • SAE's outstanding reputation among the world's premier mobility engineers works in your book's favor.
  • SAE offers top-notch project management, editorial, production, and marketing services. The size of SAE's publishing program allows for highly personalized attention throughout the publishing process.
  • SAE offers competitive royalty rates.

Q. How much money will I make?
A. The amount of royalties you will receive depends on the number of books sold, the price of the books, and the royalty rate. The number of books that sell is heavily dependent on the topic, size of the market, and how your book deals with the topic. Authors who are very well-known in their field generally sell more copies than lesser-known authors (although book authorship can do much to enhance your reputation). Promotional efforts also affect sales. The price of the book is determined by SAE's publishing staff. When setting price, we consider the topic, the author, the strength of the manuscript, and what the target market is generally willing to pay. SAE pays royalty rates that are comparable to other publishers.

Q. How do I get started?
A. Getting started is easy.

  • The first step is to submit a book proposal form.
  • Download our book manuscript guidelines*, manuscript preparation checklist*, and book proposal form. Complete the proposal form as thoroughly as possible, and return it to us with your book outline.
  • Your proposal will be reviewed by SAE staff as well as by experts from your field. This review process helps maintain SAE's high quality publishing standards.
  • If we decide to publish your book, we'll offer you a contract. When the contract is signed, it's time to start writing.

Q. How can SAE help me while I'm writing?
A. SAE offers authors the following support:

  • A product manager who will be available every step of the way to answer questions and provide guidance.
  • The book manuscript guidelines and manuscript checklist are available to help you prepare your manuscript.
  • Our editorial staff will work with you to ensure that the style and presentation of your work are appropriate for the target readership.
  • You may request access to SAE's database of technical papers and publications relevant to your topic.

Q. I've finished writing my draft manuscript - what's next?
A. SAE staff will keep the project moving quickly and efficiently through to publication.

  • We'll obtain content reviews from subject-matter experts.
  • You will be given an opportunity to read the reviews and incorporate relevant comments.

Q. I've finished writing my final manuscript - what's next?
A. SAE's editorial staff will edit your manuscript for consistency, clarity, and grammar.

  • Our graphics professionals will design your book with high-quality production and graphic design values.
  • Your book will be printed in a timely manner; SAE publishes most books within 9 months of receiving the final manuscript.

Q. How will SAE market my book?
A. When you publish your book with SAE, you have the strength of SAE's marketing expertise at work for you.

  • Our marketing staff carefully reviews your book to develop a marketing strategy tailored to your book's audience and sales potential.
  • Before publication, the staff may consult with you to obtain additional marketing input and ideas.
  • Marketing efforts for your book may include any of the following:
    • Press release.
    • Direct mail: individual brochure specifically promoting your book; combined title catalog featuring many books on a given topic; brochure that highlights our newest titles; inclusion in our annual catalog. Depending on your book's market, direct mail brochures will be distributed not only to SAE's members and book buyers, but may also be sent to outside audiences such as members of other organizations and subscribers to non-SAE magazines.
    • Promotion on SAE's website, including the ability to purchase the book online.
    • Inclusion in the SAE opt-in e-mail notification service.
    • Review copies sent to technical periodicals for their review.
    • Sale and display at one or more of SAE's many annual meetings and conferences.
    • Notification of the book's availability for Amazon.com and other resellers.
  • Your book will continue to be promoted in the years following its publication. Each book we publish receives the individual attention it warrants to maximize its sales potential and longevity in the marketplace.

First step: The proposal

The first step in publishing your book with SAE is submitting a book proposal. The proposal consists a completed book proposal form, which provides information about your proposed book.

You may email, fax, or mail your proposal to:

Email: writeabook@sae.org
Fax: 724-776-3036
Mail:
SAE International
Publishing
400 Commonwealth Drive
Warrendale, PA 15096-0001
USA

Your proposal will receive two reviews: one to assess its technical strength, which will be completed by experts in the field, and another to assess the economic and market feasibility of the proposal, which will be completed by a team of marketing and product development professionals at SAE. The reviews generally take one to three months to complete.

After the reviews are completed, you will be informed of whether or not your proposal is accepted. If your proposal is accepted, you will be offered a publishing agreement.

Publishing agreement

SAE uses a standard publishing industry publishing agreement. You will receive a copy of the agreement for your records once it has been executed (signed by you and SAE). It is important to sign the agreement as soon as possible after the proposal is approved so that funds can be released for artwork and royalties can be budgeted.

Writing your book

It generally takes several months to a year to write a book, but it depends on your project's complexity, size, how experienced a writer you are, how much you have already written, and how much time you can regularly devote to the project.

The size of your book depends on its scope and complexity. As a guide, manuscripts are between 300 and 600 pages long, double spaced on 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper, including front matter, figures, tables, and appendices. Generally, there are about 400 words on a typeset page. Your contract will stipulate your manuscript's length.

The product manager assigned to your project is available during the writing process to answer questions, obtain previously published SAE materials for your use, find individuals who can review chapters and ideas for their technical merit as you write, and generally keep your project moving.

Getting permission to reprint material

It can take months, even years, to secure permission from other publishers to use previously published material (figures, photos, tables, etc.). Authors are responsible for obtaining and paying for (if required) permission to use previously published material in their book. Don't let this step wait until you finish writing! Identify what permissions you will need to secure as early as possible in the writing process and submit a Permission Form to each publisher from whom you wish to obtain permission. You may need to follow up with them one or more times until you obtain permission. Some publishers require authors to use their forms, and many require online form submission. Your manuscript will begin the publishing process once all permissions have been secured and paid for (if required).

Tips for obtaining permission:

  • Fill in the permissions form completely, whether you are using SAE's permission form or the copyright holder's.
  • Be specific about what figures you are seeking permission for (name of book, year of publication, edition, author, figure number, page number, caption, etc.). Including a photocopy of the figure you want can be helpful.
  • Make sure your name and contact information is on the form so they know who to contact.
  • Find out who in the organization should receive the form (addressing the envelope to "Permissions Department" is advisable if you do not have a name of an individual.)
  • Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with your permission request.

Submitting your draft manuscript

Once you have written your manuscript and formatted it according to the book manuscript guidelines,* it will undergo a technical review, as well as a review by SAE's publishing staff. This review will help pinpoint suggestions for strengthening the flow and technical content of the manuscript, and will also highlight any formatting or production issues that will help speed the publication of your book.

After all reviews are complete, your product manager will send you the reviewers' comments.

Submitting your final manuscript

You should select and incorporate the comments from technical reviewers that will improve the manuscript, and make sure that it complies with the book manuscript guidelines*. You must incorporate all formatting comments made by the SAE staff.

Your final manuscript should be sent in one package, after you are completely satisfied with the text, and after all figures and tables are finalized and all permissions are received.

More details about submitting your manuscript are available in the book manuscript guidelines*.

Last step: Publishing

It generally takes 9 months to publish the average manuscript once SAE receives it in publishable form. When the product manager receives your manuscript, he or she checks the materials to ensure that they follow the book manuscript guidelines*. Final manuscripts that do not adhere to these guidelines will be returned to the author for completion.

The product manager meets with production and marketing staff to discuss the publishing of completed manuscripts. The publishing team discusses the features of the manuscript, sets production schedules, and discusses marketing activities. Some of the details that are worked out at this meeting are the book's binding, size, price, and cover design concepts.

After this meeting, an editor begins to edit your manuscript and the marketing staff begins preparations to promote your book. You will be asked to review the edited text. Once the text is finalized, the book is designed, laid out, printed and bound. The finished book is sent for copyright and accession to the Library of Congress, and is promoted.

Details about the publishing process are available in the book manuscript guidelines*.
